Interior Painting Project Guide

Whether you have a small wall repair needed after an electrician or plumber has completed their work or you have a full home paint project planned, we have the crew for you. Painting can be a long task that requires a keen eye for details. Let us get the job done. We have a large focus on the importance of preparation. Once your project is scheduled we will start site protecting your furniture and other belongings and begging to prep the walls. Once prep is completed the fun will begin! After the walls and/or ceiling & trim are painted, your home will look good as new.

What do I need to do to prepare for my paint project?
To prepare for your interior paint project, we ask that all breakable objects are removed from the room that is being painted. Please move all furniture away from the walls towards the center of the room. If you are unable to move certain items or need assistance moving furniture, please let your project manager know. Please remove all pictures and wall decor from the walls. If you want to rehang the pictures in the same spot, please leave the respective nails in the walls. If you want any nail holes filled in, please remove the respective nails from the walls.

Will Blue Star cover my furniture and flooring before painting starts?
Yes, with all projects we will cover and protect furniture and flooring in work areas.

Do you use paints with low VOC?
Yes, low VOC paints are often used in homes where residents have chemical sensitivities or allergies. Most paints we use are low VOC. If you have preferences about the VOC of the paint, please let your project manager know.

Do you handle lead paint projects?
Yes, we are EPA lead certified.

What is the difference between paint and a stain?
The main difference between paint and stain is that paint sits on top of the surface while stain seeps into the surface. Paint also needs to be used with a primer while stain does not require the use of a primer before it is used.

What sheen of paint should I choose for my project?
Paint sheens often depend on the area it is being applied and personal preference. We commonly recommend; eggshell for walls, semi gloss for trim and other decorative features, and flat for ceilings. Reference our Paint sheen guide for more details.

Which brand of paint do you use?
We typically use and recommend PPG, but we also use Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, Farrow & Ball. 

Does Blue Star provide the paint or do I provide the paint?
Blue Star will provide the paint and the cost of the paint will be included in your project estimate. This price will also reflect the contractor discount Blue Star receives. 

If I don’t know what color I want, can you help me pick one?
We can provide help with paint color choices. We can also refer you to one of our trusted designers to help you with the decision.

Do you guys prepare and repair the walls?
Yes, we will repair all nail pops, cracks, caulk where needed and prime all areas. All surfaces will receive a light scuff sand to prepare the surface for paint and primer.
